On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the emancipation of enslaved people in Texas, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This day is now celebrated as Juneteenth, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.
